The Cantigas de Santa Maria is a collection of over four hundred monophonic pieces in Galician-Portuguese, composed and compiled in the court of King Alfonso X “the wise” (1252-1284). This repertoire stands as the largest extant collection of songs written in any European vernacular language before the fourteenth century. The poetry of most of these pieces is narrative and usually recounts miracles performed by the Virgin Mary throughout the known world. In this hands-on course on the Cantigas the Santa Maria, students will: learn about the production, sources, and cultural context of the collection; study their music notation following different musicological theories; analyze their melodic construction and the relation between their text and music; examine the most common performance theories which have been advanced by modern musicologists and performers; and explore the connection between the Cantigas and other European repertoires and their performative contexts (liturgical music, paraliturgical dances and processions, troubadour/jongleur song). The theories of a possible 'Arabic influence' on the repertoire, will also be discussed in compositional and performative terms.

Las Cantigas de Santa María es una colección de más de cuatrocientas piezas monofónicas en gallego-portugués, compuestas y recopiladas en la corte del rey Alfonso X “el sabio” (1252-1284). Este repertorio se erige como la colección más grande existente de canciones escritas en cualquier lengua vernácula europea antes del siglo XIV. La poesía de la mayoría de estas piezas es narrativa y suele relatar los milagros realizados por la Virgen María en el mundo conocido. En este curso los estudiantes: examinarán la producción, las fuentes y el contexto cultural de la colección; aprenderán a leer su notación musical siguiendo diferentes teorías musicológicas; analizarán su construcción melódica y la relación entre su texto y música; examinarán las teorías de interpretación más comunes presentadas por musicólogos e intérpretes; y estudiarán la conexión entre las Cantigas y otros repertorios europeos y sus contextos performativos (música litúrgica, bailes y procesiones paralitúrgicas y música profana). La teoría de la 'influencia árabe' será también dicustida en terminos compositivos e interpretativos.
