Medieval Harp III: The Harp and the Anglo-Norman Repertoire

Medieval Harp III: The Harp and the Anglo-Norman Repertoire

Presentation

Literary and iconographic sources indicate the presence of the harp in the medieval British Isles. While the medieval British music that has survived to our days is rather scarce, the extant repertoire can still offer a great variety of musical styles (as well as languages with the cohabitation of Anglo-Norman, Middle English, and Latin). This music allow us to explore different aspects of medieval harp playing. In this course students will study advanced harp techniques, explore phrasing, ornamentation and improvisation, work on creating an accompaniment (from drones to simple polyphony), adapt vocal monophonic and polyphonic music for the harp, and play and create a purely instrumental repertoire
