El arte de la canción de los trovadores

The troubadours have been credited as the creators of the lyrical song in modern European languages. The exquisite poetic-musical craftmanship of their compositions, turned Occitan, the vernacular language of southern France, into an authentic vehicle of artistic and intellectual expression (challenging the hegemony of the Latin language on these fronts). In troubadour songs, rhythmic poetry, rhetoric, and melody are masterfully combined to create a discourse where the poetic “I” (of the composer/performer) conveys direct personal views about courtly love, politics, war, and religion. A thorough poetic and musical examination of this repertoire can be conducted through the study of extant songs (around 250 with melody) and contemporary poetic treatises that discuss their composition. Nonetheless, the troubadours composed their songs to be sung and as such they only achieved their full “materialization” through the act of performance. For this reason, a comprehensive study of their art must place performance at the center of the discussion. In this hands-on course students will study the context, poetic-musical compositional techniques, sources, and performance practice of the troubadour song.

Los trovadores han sido acreditados como los creadores de la canción lírica de las lenguas europeas modernas. La exquisita construcción poético-musical de sus composiciones, convirtió al occitano, lengua vernácula del sur de Francia, en un auténtico vehículo de expresión artística e intelectual (desafiando la hegemonía de la lengua latina en estos frentes). En las canciones de trovadores, poesía rítmica, retórica y melodía se combinan magistralmente para crear un discurso donde el “yo” poético (del compositor/intérprete) transmite puntos de vista personales sobre el amor cortés, la política, la guerra y la religión. Este repertorio se puede estudiar a través del estudio de canciones que han sobrevivido con notación musical (alrededor de 250) y de tratados poéticos contemporáneos que hablan de su composición. Puesto que los trovadores componían sus canciones para ser interpretadas, un estudio integral de este arte debe situar la performance como centro de discusión. En este curso práctico, los estudiantes estudian el contexto, las técnicas de composición poético-musicales, las fuentes y la práctica de interpretación de la canción trovadoresca.
