The medieval music source known as the Manuscrit du Roi (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, fonds français 844) contains the first collection of purely instrumental music recorded in the medieval West. This collection is composed of eleven pieces copied in Franconian notation, many of them with titles that identify them as specific types of pieces. Two of them are called 'danses' and eight of them 'estampies' (one does not have a tittle). Fortunately, the contemporary music theoretician Johannes de Grocheio in his Ars musicae (c. 1300) discusses three types of instrumental compositions that can be directly associated with the pieces in Paris 844: the ductia, the nota, and the stantipes. In this course students will study the forms and the notation of the instrumental pieces contained in the Manuscript du Roi and discuss different performative contexts that are suggested both by contemporary literature and art and by modern musicological studies. Students will also transcribe the eleven pieces directly from the manuscript to create their own editions of the full instrumental repertoire, always considering different possibilities suggested by the original notation.

La fuente musical medieval conocida como el Manuscrit du Roi (París, Bibliothèque Nationale, fonds français 844) contiene la primera colección de música puramente instrumental registrada en el occidente medieval. Esta colección está compuesta por once piezas copiadas en notación franconiana, muchas de ellas con títulos que las asocian con formas musicales y contextos interpretativos de la època. Dos de ellas aparecen denominadas como 'danses' y ocho como 'estampies' (una de ellas no tiene título). Afortunadamente, el teórico musical contemporáneo Johannes de Grocheio en su Ars musicae (c. 1300) analiza tres tipos de composiciones instrumentales que pueden asociarse directamente con las piezas del París 844: la ductia, la nota y las stantipes. En este curso, los estudiantes estudiarán las formas y la notación de las piezas instrumentales contenidas en el Manuscript du Roi y discutirán diferentes contextos interpretativos sugeridos tanto por la literatura y el arte contemporáneos como por estudios musicológicos modernos. Los estudiantes también transcribirán las once piezas directamente del manuscrito para crear sus propias ediciones del repertorio instrumental, considerando siempre las diferentes posibilidades sugeridas por la notación original.
