Medieval Singing I: Carmina Burana - An Entry into Medieval Monophonic Song
Medieval Singing I: Carmina Burana - An Entry into Medieval Monophonic Song
Presentation
Since its rediscovery in the 19th century, the Codex Buranus has been offering its voice in delivering one of the most treasured testimonies of the rich and intense cultural lives of medieval men and women. Thought to have been compiled sometime in the 13th century, this unusual manuscript contains over 200 poems, some of which have been transmitted with musical notation. By covering almost every imaginable subject matter, as well as a variety of musical and poetic genres, the Carmina Burana manuscript is an ideal starting point for any singer wishing to enter the world of medieval monophonic song. This course is a survey of medieval monophonic song repertoires studied in the context of the Carmina Burana MS and the Fragmenta Burana (Clm 4660 — CB and Clm 4660a — CB*). Each of its six sessions focuses on a different genre as categorized in the CB: moral/satirical song, love song, drinking/gambling song, religious song, lament, and liturgical drama. In each session the students will work on two pieces, one piece in Latin found in the CB or the CB*, and another piece, mostly in a vernacular language, which falls into the same poetic genre. The objective of such study is to familiarize the students with the variety of different medieval monophonic repertoires contained in at least one tradition, while at the same time casting a wide net not only geographically but also chronologically. In this first stage the technical work introduces them primarily to the study of historical pronunciation, as well as poetic and musical genre.
