Handheld Frame drum were popularly used in the music of the Middle Ages. There were three different types: a round frame drum without jingles, a round frame drum with jingles inserted in its shell, and a frame drum of square shape. Professional and amateur musicians utilized them to accompany vocal and instrumental dance and processional music. Fortunately, medieval sources provide us with crucial information about their use, playing technique, and performance practice. The way of playing described in medieval sources implies constant hand and body movement, and a strong sound projection.In this course students are introduced to the basic medieval playing techniques of the square and round frame drums and learn how to improvise and accompany pieces of the medieval repertoire.
Los panderos eran comúnmente utilizados durante la edad media tanto por músicos profesionales como aficionados para acompañar la música de danzas y procesiones. Había tres tipos: uno de marco redondo sin sonajas, otro de marco redondo con sonajas insertadas en el cuerpo y finalmente uno de forma cuadrada. Afortunadamente, las fuentes medievales nos brindan información sobre su uso, técnica y práctica de interpretación. La forma de tocar descrita en las fuentes medievales implica mucho movimiento de manos y de cuerpo y una gran proyección sonora.
En este curso, los estudiantes son introducidos a las técnicas básicas de interpretación medieval de los panderos redondos y cuadrado y aprenden a improvisar y acompañar piezas del repertorio medieval.
