Cítola/guiterna/salterio III: instrumentos de cuerda pulsada y el repertorio musical clerical

Presentation

Medieval literature, art, and extant music, testify to the popularity of the citole, the gittern, and the psaltery among clerics. The sources also indicate that clerics used these instruments to perform both religious and secular repertoires, which included lyrical and dance songs, pious compositions dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and purely instrumental pieces. Furthermore, a good number of Latin lays and secular sequences can be easily performed on the citole and the psaltery.

In this course students will: strengthen their technique, discuss rhythmic interpretation, phrasing, ornamentation, and self-accompaniment, study and perform clerical pieces associated to the citole and the psaltery in medieval literature and art, and search and work on other clerical pieces that can be perfectly performed with the instruments of the course (taking into consideration their tuning, range, type of melody, and connection with the above mentioned repertoires).

Fuentes medievales literarias, visuales y musicales dan testimonio de la popularidad que gozaron la citola, la guiterna y el salterio en el ámbito clerical. Las fuentes indican que los clérigos utilizaban estos instrumentos para interpretar repertorios religiosos y profanos que incluían canciones líricas y de danza, composiciones piadosas dedicadas a la Virgen María y piezas puramente instrumentales. Además, un buen número de canciones en latín y de secuencias profanas pueden tocarse facilmente con la citola y en el salterio (lo que sugiere su cercanía a estos instrumentos).

En este curso los alumnos: fortalecerán su técnica instrumental, explorarán e interpretarán los repertórios clericales que pueden asociarce con los instrumentos del curso y desarrollarán técnicas de accompañamiento, improvisación y ornamentación.

It is necessary to have an advanced playing level, and knowledge of basic music theory and modern music notation. Es necesario tener un nivel intermedio de técnica con los instrumentos, conocimientos fendamentales sobre música, lectura de notación musical moderna y capacidad de lectura en inglés.
