Iconograpfía musical medieval

Musical iconography encompasses the study of music depictions in the visual arts. It can be extremely useful for the study of medieval music as it can provide valuable information about performers, audiences, musical gatherings, instruments, and performance conventions. Nonetheless, medieval art is not “photographic” in nature and responds to visual conventions that are rather foreign to modern viewers. For this reason, it is important to develop a “period eye” to correctly identify and interpret any type of music data that might be recorded in medieval illuminations, frescos, panel painting, carvings, or sculpture. To this end, works of art had to be placed within certain iconographic and artistic styles and trends, in connection to textual sources, and in the social and cultural contexts of their creators, sponsors, and audiences.

In this course, participants will develop a “musical iconographic eye” through the study of visual models, styles, and sources of the period and by learning how to analyze music depictions in connection with other medieval data.

La iconografía musical comprende el estudio de las representaciones musicales en las artes visuales. Esta puede ser muy útil para el estudio de la música medieval pues en muchos casos puede ofrecer valiosa información sobre intérpretes, público, instrumentos y técnicas de interpretación del período. No obstante, el arte medieval no es “fotográfico” y responde a convenciones visuales ajenas al espectador moderno. Por esta razón, es importante identificar e interpretar correctamente cualquier tipo de información musical que pueda estar registrada en miniaturas, pinturas, tallas o esculturas medievales. Para ello, las obras de arte deben situarse dentro de ciertos estilos y tendencias iconográficas y artísticas y en conexión con las fuentes textuales y los contextos sociales y culturales de sus creadores, patrocinadores y audiencias.

En este curso, los participantes desarrollarán un “ojo iconográfico musical” al estudiar los modelos, estilos y fuentes visuales del período y al aprender a analizar las representaciones musicales en conexión con otras fuentes medievales.
